When I was young and someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I remember responding, "a dinosaur". The answer to that question changed frequently over the years. I think it was 3rd grade that I first considered being a teacher. I loved everything about 3rd grade. My teacher, the activities, my friends--nothing seemed like it would ever compare. I couldn't imagine leaving that environment, so why not become a teacher? I also thought of archaeologist, pyrotechnic, veterinarian, and film maker. In fact, when I left high school for college, I was determined to get into the Film School at my university. When I was denied, I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out what I was meant to do. I remembered my 3rd grade self and knew that I had to try my hand at Education. I got into the Elementary Education program (a feat unto itself) at Florida State University and graduated 2 years later with honors.
Graduating with your degree is a huge accomplishment. It takes many years and tens of thousands of dollars to become a card carrying member of educated adult society. Now what? For the last 17+ years it has been breakfast, classes, lunch, classes, homework, dinner, bed. Throw work in there somewhere for the final 5 to 8 years. Suddenly, you wake up, and you don't have classes anymore. If you're lucky, at least you have work. If you're really lucky you have work related to your degree.
I graduated in 2012. For the last two years I've worked 2 jobs. I made 18k last year, with outstanding loans of $30,000 upon graduation ($23,000 now! Yay!). I'm thrilled to announce that I am finally about to start my real career as a teacher.
I hope to help other first year teachers and recent graduates, as well as make connections with others that can help me! ;)
